According to Ferneley’s account books, this was the only picture he painted for ‘Col. O’Mally’. Although no further details are given about the patron, it may have been George O’Malley (1780-1843) of Ballinvilla, Castlebar. After an early career in the army in the Castlebar yeomanry and North Mayo Militia, O’Malley served in Egypt, Malta, Gibraltar, North America and Jamaica. During the battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo in 1815, O’Malley assumed command of his battalion after the commanding officer Lieutenant-Colonel Homerton was injured, but was himself wounded twice. O’Malley was appointed Major-General in November 1841.
