ORTELIUS, Abraham (1527-1598)
Theatrum orbis terrarium [-Parergon, -Nomenclator]. Antwerp: Jan Baptist Vrients, 1603.
A fine hand-coloured copy of one of the largest editions of this great atlas by Ortelius published by Jan Baptist Vrients, including both the 'Parergon' and 'Nomenclator'. Ortelius was geographer to King Philip II of Spain and is credited with having authored the first modern atlas, the Theatrum orbis terrarum. After Ortelius’ death ‘the copperplates were acquired in 1601 by Jan Baptist Vrients who published a Spanish edition in 1602 (printed by the Plantin Press) and this Latin edition of 1603, printed by Robert Bruneau, with several new maps’ (Van der Krogt). Van der Krogt IIIA, 31:053. Shirley T.ORT-1hh.
3 parts bound in 2 volumes (including the Parergon and Nomenclator), folio (454 x 285mm). Text in Latin. Engraved allegorical general title with full-page engraving of the arms of Philip II of Spain on verso, engraved epitaph incorporating a miniature portrait of Ortelius, engraved portrait of Ortelius, engraved title to the Parergon, all finely coloured by hand, the general title with lettering heightened with gold, letterpress title to the Nomenclator with small hand-coloured engraved vignette with a world map, and 154 (of 156) hand-coloured engraved double-page mapsheets, including 38 in the Parergon (lacking 2 maps: 74 Italia and 91 Ischia, some dust-staining to general title, occasional marginal waterstaining and light browning, some colour showing through to the text, colophon with small loss at lower corner, not affecting text). Late 17th-century mottled half sheep, marbled paper boards, spines in compartments with raised bands gilt, morocco labels (repairs to spine and corners, bindings rubbed).
