VALK, Gerard (1652-1726) and Petrus SCHENK (1661-1711)
Nova totius Geographica telluris projectio. Amsterdam: Gerard Valk, [circa 1706].
A rare six-volume composite atlas containing 507 engraved maps. ‘From about 1680 Gerard Valck was active as a map-engraver and publisher, sometimes working in collaboration with Peter Schenck and Jacob Robyn to prepare maps for an atlas for which a privilege was obtained in 1686. According to Koeman, Valck’s own atlas was not issued until about 1700 but certain maps came onto the market earlier’ (Shirley).
The maps in these six volumes, most of which bear the imprint of Valk and Shenk, are arranged as follows: Volume 1: 3 world maps (including 2 double hemisphere) and 98 maps of Europe and northern Europe, including Denmark, Sweden, northern Germany, Russia, Great Britain and Ireland, with regional maps of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Volume 2: 44 maps of Belgium and the Netherlands. Volume 3: 133 maps of Germany, Silesia, Austria, Pomerania, and Prussia. Volume 4: 88 maps of Spain, Portugal, France and the Mediterranean titled on spine ‘Hispania and Gallia’. Volume 5: 77 maps of Italy, Hungary and Greece. Volume 6: 64 maps of Asia, Africa and America. cf. Koeman III, Val 1 (atlas of 1702 with up to 100 maps).
6 volumes, large folio (636 x 368 mm). Engraved allegorical title in volume 1, and 507 double-page engraved maps on thick paper, including engraved table of distances at the end of volume 6 with an inset map of Europe, 2 folding (a few maps with slight creases in volumes 4-6, some maps with light browning). Modern three-quarter red morocco with marbled paper covers, spines in compartments with raised bands and lettering pieces.
