Nuovo atlante geografico universal. Rome: Calcografia Camerale, 1792-1797-1801.
Rare complete set of Cassini’s Nuovo atlante geografico universal. Including the general world maps, twenty-four of the maps relate to the Americas. Among these are maps devoted to Hawaii and Alaska, both among the earliest printed atlas maps of their kind. Several of the Pacific island groups are also shown for the first time on atlas maps devoted to them. The first part of Cassini's three volume atlas is particularly valued for its globe gores: the terrestrial globe is based upon Captain James Cook's voyages, the last of which aboard the Resolution was completed in 1779. The celestial globe makes use of the research of John Flamsteed (1646-1719) and Nicolas Louis de Lacaille (1713-1762). Phillips, Atlases 670.

3 volumes, folio (450 x 323mm). 3 hand-coloured allegorical engraved titles by Alessandro Mochetti, 34 pages of letterpress text with hand-coloured engraved tail-piece, hand-coloured engraved diagram and 182 (55+57+70) double-page engraved mapsheets hand-coloured in outline including 12 globe gores for celestial and terrestial globes, engraved index leaf at end of each volume (discoloration chiefly affecting green-painted areas, some spotting, first double-page plate ‘Tavola sferica’ with old repaired tears, map 24 in volume 3 rather stained). Near-uniform contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt (rather rubbed). Provenance: Sotheby’s 21 June 1990, lot 155.
