MICHELOT, Henri and Laurent BRÉMOND (fl.1694-1730)
Untitled collection of 16 charts of the Mediterranean. Marseille: Michelot and Brémond, 1715-1723.
An unusual suite of charts, exquisitely painted by a contemporary artist, probably issued in this form by the publishers, the number of charts conforming to the usual 16. Although very largely devoted to the Mediterranean, the first plate is a ‘Nouvelle carte des côtes de l’ocean contenant les côtes de Portugal et Barbarie … et les Isles de Canaries’. The dates on the charts range from 1715 through to 1723. For similar untitled atlas collections in the BL, see Shirley BL M.MICH-1a-1d. Palau 168324.

Folio (491 x 354mm). Untitled suite of 16 hand-coloured double-page engraved charts, some signed by P. Starckman, the 8th chart ‘Nouvelle carte des côtes de Catalogne, Roussillon, Languedoc, Provenace, d’Italie,et partie de l’Isle de Corce’ counted as two being printed on two double-page sheets and folding with folds strengthened along back (charts 2-4 with colours slightly faded, dampstaining affecting from chart 6 until end with some associated adhesion, chart 6 with a short repaired tear without loss, chart 9 trimmed into top edge and with minor worming to gutter that continues to end). Contemporary calf, spine with small gilt rosettes (rubbed and worn, particularly at edges with leather coming loose).
