Bellin’s important marine atlas, providing the most comprehensive and accurate coverage of the world’s coastlines. A large, fresh copy, retaining almost the full sheet size, and with the addition of 36 maps not called for in the index. It was produced at a time of rivalry between France and England, especially vying for advantage in relation to the Americas and beyond. It was the official publication of the French admiralty and long preceded any equivalent work of the English navy. The number of charts expanded steadily with successive issues, hence the 17 ‘bis’ plates plus another 19 maps. Among these added maps is Flinders’s Carte du Detroit de Basse entre la Nouvelle Galles Meridionale et la Terre de Diemen, a French edition of his important map documenting his circumnavigation of Van Diemen’s Land, proving it was an island separate from continental Australia.
2 volumes, folio (693 x 530mm). Engraved allegorical frontispiece, 2 engraved titles within emblematic borders and cartouches by Arrivet dated 1765, and 135 full- or double-page engraved charts, including an additional 17 ‘bis’ plates and 19 other maps uncalled for in the index (lacking the plate of maritime flags [plate I:3] and letterpress index leaves, one or two charts lightly browned, light spotting in just a few plates). Contemporary marbled paper boards, orange paper spine labels lettered in gilt (rubbed and scuffed, first label chipped, light wear at extremities).
