COLOM, Arnold (1623-1668)
Zee-Atlas ofte Water-Wereldt. Inhoudende een korte beschrijvinge van alle de bekende Zee-kusten Des Aardtrycks. Amsterdam: Op’t Water, by de Niewen-brugh, in de Lichtende Colom [ca. 1658].
A fine example of the second edition of Colom's Zee-Atlas with all plates beautifully hand coloured and heightened in gold, rarely found complete with text and plates; it 'is one of the most important atlases in the well known category of Dutch sea-atlases' Koeman p.115.

The first edition of this pioneering maritime atlas was published with Latin text circa 1654. This second edition has the text in Dutch and the dedication to the Gecommitteerde raden ter Admiraliteit. Arnold Colom, an innovator in the field of maritime mapping, was the first to assemble this coherent group of sea charts and publish them as atlas sheets, using a large format suitable for use at sea, and in the case of the charts of the oceans, issued on the same scale as the Portuguese and Spanish charts then only available in a restricted form as copies in manuscript or printed on vellum. This atlas appears to be in the third state with the dates removed from the charts, and their order and pagination changed. Koeman A Col.2 (recording only 4 copies: Maritime Museum Amsterdam; University Library, Amsterdam; British Library; State Library, Marberg); Shirley 395 (world map); Shirley (Maritime Atlases) M. Colm 4a; Burden 316, (Nieu Nederlandt) third state with the pagination altered to p. 16 with no date; Burden 320, (Barbados) third state with the pagination altered to p. 14 with no date; Burden 321 (Brazil) third state with the pagination altered to p. 12 with no date.

Folio (560 x 320mm). Letterpress title with arms of the city of Amsterdam, 2pp description, dedication to the Board of the Admiralty, hand-coloured engraved world map and 16 double page charts, the cartouches, decoration and compass-roses all heightened in gold, printed on thin paper backed on thicker paper, charts numbered on the plate at the lower corners (light age toning, occasional spotting, short clean tears along folds of several plates, small chip at head of world map with small loss, tiny worm track in plate 11, title and several maps loose, edges of text leaves chipped and a little dog-eared , minor marginal soiling in places). Contemporary vellum, sides doubled gilt ruled and scrolled to a panel design, central panel with elaborate gilt strap-work corner-pieces and large central gilt strap-work arabesque (vellum water stained on lower side causing some shrinking in upper margin, soiled and a little stained, remains of yellow silk ties, block coming loose in binding). Provenance: 'Emil Hermann 1745 Julii' (manuscript inscription on front fly leaf).
