Sole edition of this sumptuous book describing and illustrating the magnificent palace and gardens at Caserta. Vanvitelli was engaged by Charles Bourbon, King of the Two Sicilies, to design a new royal palace near Caserta, in the Campanian countryside north of his capital at Naples. The extensive and elaborate palace with its breathtaking gardens, known as the Italian Versailles, was constructed between 1752 and 1772 to Vanvitelli's plans. Charles funded the publication of this elegant record of his palace. The text ends with 'Fine della prima parte', but no further parts were published. Half-title, engraved title with vignette, letterpress dedication with large engraved arms of the dedicatee Charles III of Naples and fine engraved initial, 19pp. text with fine engraved initial, and large engraved head- and tail-piece, 14 double-page engraved plates on thick paper by Nolli, Pozzi, Orazi and Morghen after Vanvitelli (some leaves and plates browned). Contemporary red morocco, spine in compartments with raised bands gilt, lettered in one compartment and with a repeated fleur-de-lys and gilt decoration in the other compartments, covers with decorative gilt roll-tool border (restoration and repairs to spine, corners and edges).
