From the library of the ducs de Luynes, Château de Dampierre: first edition of the first work by the eminent Victorian architect, T.L. Donaldson, a result of his tour to Italy in 1819 where he went to measure and draw the principal buildings of Pompeii. BAL RIBA 902.
2 volumes bound in one, folio (532 x 354mm). 6 engraved head- and tail-pieces in the text of volume 1, 81 (27+53) engraved plates and plans, one double-page, 5 hand-coloured, by W. B. Cooke after James Cockburn, tissue guards (light scattered spotting). Olive-brown polished calf gilt, flat spine gilt, marbled edges (small paper shelf label at foot of spine, joints starting at head and foot, rubbed). Provenance: ducs de Luynes at the château de Dampierre (Dampiere bookplate, sale at Sotheby’s Paris, Bibliothèque des ducs de Luynes, Château de Dampierre, Part 2, 22-23 October 2013, lot 404).
