RAOUL-ROCHETTE, Désiré (1789-1854) and Jules-Frederic BOUCHET (1799-1860)
Choix de monuments inedits, part one only: Maison du Poëte Tragique Pompéi. Paris: Delauney, n.d.
Choix de Peintures Inédites tirées d’Herculanum et de Pompéi. Paris: Delauney, n.d..
The Delauney issue of the first part of a projected monumental work documenting the discoveries being unearthed at Herculaneum and Pompei. The discovery of the House of the Tragic Poet in November 1824 drew Raoul-Rochette, curator of antiquities at the Bibliothèque Royale, to the site and inspired him to undertake a deluxe publication in multiple parts, the first part to present coloured etchings by Bouchet of the vibrantly-hued mythological fresco decorations. Bouchet's images are invaluable documents of the villa before its disassembly, weathering, and final rebuilding. The work proved overly ambitious and publication was abandoned sometime after 13 September 1843 (Bibliographie de la France no. 1390, registering Livraison 12). Surviving copies are frequently fragmentary; for instance, the author’s own copy contained 22 plates only and the National Gallery of Art copy lacks all printed text as here.
Raoul-Rochette began another multi-part work, Choix de peintures inédites: tirées d’Herculanum et de Pompeï (originally published in seven parts, 1844–1853). The two works appear to have been re-issued together by Maheu around 1870. The present volumes are undated and issued by Delauney. Not in Berlin Kat. Owing to imprecise bibliographical descriptions available, sold not subject to return.
2 works, broadsheet folio (517 x 349mm). Maison: letterpress title, 27 hand-coloured etched plates (some browning and spotting). Choix: 28 etched and engraved plates, including title and engraved contents plate, all but 4 hand-coloured, additional etched and coloured title laid in (no printed text leaves present, title somewhat browned, some spotting, tiny holes in final plate of Choix). Fragmentary watermarks on many plates in both works ARCH / TTES as in the London, National Art Library copy. Both works loose in original cloth-backed printed boards, 3 ties (lightly worn, Choix rebacked).
