NAPLES
[An album of 24 Neapolitan watercolours. Presumably Italy: late 19th century].
A charming collection of Neapolitan scenes: 24 miniature watercolours capturing snapshots of scenic views and picturesque sites across the region. Evidently intended for sale to German tourists, the album features highlights of a grand tour of Naples and its vicinity. Each image presents a different monument or historic Neapolitan event: a finely-painted city scape with small figures accentuating the grandeur of the views, depictions of the 1822 eruption of Mount Vesuvius, and scenes at Pompeii reflecting its popularity amongst tourists following the excavations that began in the latter half of the 18th century.
12mo (144 x 110mm). 24 watercolours on paper (image size: 63 x 98mm), each within embossed card borders (border size: 90 x 124mm), pasted onto 12 card leaves, each watercolour titled in white manuscript on black border (a few scattered spots, one border just lifting at edge). Contemporary brown blindstamped morocco, titled ‘PANORAMA VON NEAPEL’ in gilt on upper board, lower board with blindstamped central arabesque, each within multicurvilinear framing and blindruled borders, white moiré endpapers (pastedowns slightly soiled).
