ROWLING, J. K. (b. 1965)
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. London: Bloomsbury, 1997.
Uncorrected proof copy of the first Harry Potter book, issued in a print run of just 200 prior to publication of the first edition, signed by the author on a book label. While the story of the boy wizard Harry Potter would go on to take the world by storm, Rowling was totally unknown upon its first publication. The uncorrected proof copies of the novel were primarily sent to reviewers and others in the industry to generate a buzz before its official release. Rather than the famous cover art by Thomas Taylor which adorned copies of the first edition, these proof copies were issued in printed white and yellow card wrappers. With 'J.A. Rowling' on the title and 'Joanne Rowling' on the copyright. The text was slightly reset for the first edition but the error on p.53 in which ‘1 wand’ is listed twice was famously carried over. Errington AA1(a).

Octavo (198 x 127mm). Signed by the author on a Bloomsbury book label pasted on half-title. Original printed wrapper with central yellow band (some creasing along joints and corners, some faint soiling). Provenance: Christie's, South Kensington, 30 November 2001, lot 348.
