CARY, John and William. New Terrestrial Globe; New Celestial Globe..calculated to the year 1820..sold by Dr Northern, Optician Hull (circa 1825)

A fine pair of library globes on tall stands, diameters 15 inches (38cm.), overall height 40 inches (102cm.). Each globe made up of two sets of 12 hand-coloured engraved gores, celestial gores laid to ecliptic poles, the terrestrial makring the tracts of cook, La Peronse and Vancouver in the pacific, old varnish, title cartouches with pasted overlabels of Dr Northern (celestial globe with small crack to Northern heisphere, one small repaired abrasion, terrestrial with a few abrasions, and a small indent at the South Pole). Metal pinions, brass meridian circles, hand-coloured engraved horizon circles. The globes mounted on English style mahogany tripod stands, the gorizons supported by four quadrants to a fluted column, downswept tripod legs, cross-stretchers supporting compasses, castors. cf. Van der Krogt Car 6; A fine pair of Cary's 15 inch globes, this example being sold through a Dr Richard ? Northern a Hull Optician (Clifton. Directory p.202). The Cary family were not averse to other dealers of instruments, opticians etc., ordering their globes and pasting over Cary's own address. Such activity certainly circulated their globes to the gentry throughout England. (2)
