second, final state, before the complete loss of details on the skull and beard
trimmed to or just outside the borderline
a short vertical cut at lower left, a few other minor defects
generally in good condition

Jonathan Blackburne (1721-1786), Hale Hall and Liverpool (see Lugt 2650b), inscribed and dated with initial P.S._1770 / no. ... in pencil (possibly referring to Paul Sandby, see Lugt 6294); his posthumous sale, Hutchins, London, 20 March 1786 (and following days), part of lot 872 (£ .15.65.6).
