Jazzmasters and Jaguars fell out of favour in the late 1960s but were brought back into vogue by the New York band Television in the late 1970s. At that point, they were cheaper than the more desirable Fender Stratocasters and Telecasters. They were taken up again in the 1990s, most notably by Sonic Youth who, in turn, inspired bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Nirvana. These types of Fender guitars are sometimes known as ‘offset’ guitars because of their unique angular shape.
JOHNNY MARR, MARR’S GUITARS, 2023
Johnny Marr purchased this circa 1963 Fender Jazzmaster in 2008 during a period of intense touring with American indie rock band Modest Mouse. He had become obsessed with 1960s Jaguars and Jazzmasters after first playing frontman Isaac Brock’s 1965 Jaguar in 2005 (see footnote to lot 80) and was consequently in a phase of buying up good vintage examples whenever they crossed his path. When Marr acquired this particular Jazzmaster, the body had been stripped to a natural finish. He commissioned restorer Clive Brown to refinish the body in ‘Inca Silver’, after which it quickly became one of his favourite guitars. It appears that Marr took possession of the refinished Jazzmaster at the tail end of the band’s epic 20-month We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank Tour, as it was first seen in several snapshots by tour photographer Pat Graham, captured during soundcheck at the Rostraver Ice Garden, Pennsylvania, on 30 June 2008. Four days later, Marr was photographed playing the guitar on the final date of the tour at Rothbury Music Festival in Michigan on 4 July 2008.
In need of a break from touring and itching to get back to the studio, Marr returned to the UK and began working with British indie rock group The Cribs. What began as a four-day session to record an EP morphed into Marr co-writing The Cribs’ fourth album Ignore The Ignorant and a three-year stint in the band. The 1963 Jazzmaster was among the arsenal of instruments that Marr used to record the album at Seedy Underbelly Studios in Los Angeles in spring/summer 2009. To promote the release of Ignore The Ignorant, Marr was photographed with this Jazzmaster for a feature in the September 2009 issue of Guitarist magazine, telling journalist Henry Yates that he had used Jaguars, Rickenbackers, [and] some Jazzmasters on the album.
The guitar has been a staple in the studio over the years as Marr advanced into his solo era, from solo debut The Messenger in 2013 to his fourth solo album Fever Dreams Pts 1-4 in 2022. Speaking to Premier Guitar to promote the release of Fever Dreams Pts 1-4 in 2022, Marr disclosed: A lot of my gear for this record was really deliberately selected, and I really honed in on a few things. I’ve got two 1973 Les Paul Customs I used for some of the darker sounds… I played my signature Jaguar quite a lot… There’s a couple Yamaha SG-1000s and an SG-700 on the record… [and] I used my ’63 Jazzmaster too. Evidently still a favourite, Marr once again strapped on the ‘Inca Silver’ Jazzmaster in January 2018 for a photo shoot with Niall Lea, featured in the May 2018 issue of Uncut magazine. Marr told us that in early 2026, he swapped the original neck of this guitar with another 1960s Jazzmaster that remains in his collection and has since used this composite guitar to record the song ‘Just Once More’ for his fifth solo studio album, which is set for release on 2 October 2026.
