Lot Essay

Johnny Marr acquired this Gibson S-1 in the late 2000s and first used it to record parts for the songs ‘Sun & Moon’ and ‘The Crack Up’ on his debut solo studio album The Messenger, released in February 2013. Marr returned to the S-1 when recording his 2014 studio album Playland, employing the guitar on the songs ‘Boys Get Straight’, ‘Speak Out Reach Out’, and ‘Dynamo’, the latter of which was released as a 7” single. Designed by Bill Lawrence, the S-1’s three single-coil pickups were controlled with a four-position pickup/phase selector switch plus a bypass switch that shut off everything but the lead pickup, allowing for a wide range of distinctive tones.
