Lot Essay

The Monkey Bridge (Saruhashi) in the Kai Province is a classical theme that Hiroshige depicted in several prints. The composition of the present painting is almost identical to the print published by Koeido in 1854 (see Museum of Fine Arts Boston, 21.7089), bearing the same type of artist seal.
