Lot Essay

According to the Qing court archives, on the 5th day of the 3rd month of 5th year of Yongzheng reign (1727), ‘two blue and white ‘lantsa’ stem bowls were presented to Yongzheng emperor by Zhang Yuzhu’; on the 15th day of the 3rd month of 41st year of Qianlong reign (1776), ‘twenty blue and white ‘lantsa’ stem bowls were presented by Quan De’, indicating that this type of bowls was favoured by both the Yongzheng and Qianlong Emperors.

Compare to three Qianlong stem bowls of this type, including one in the Nanjing Museum, illustrated in Treasures in the Royalty – The Official Kiln Porcelain of the Chinese Qing Dynasty, Shanghai, 2003, p.305; one donated to the British Museum by Sir Augustus Wollaston Franks, accession number: Franks.1584; and one from the Kau Chi Society Collection, illustrated in Exhibition of Ancient Chinese Ceramics from the Collection of the Kau Chi Society of Chinese Art, Hong Kong, 1981, p.120.
