Lot Essay

The stem cup is delicately painted with eight boys marching around the exterior, the boys are divided into two groups separated by plantain and rocks. The base is inscribed with an apocryphal Xuande reign mark. A similar blue and white stem cup of same design and apocryphal mark, dated as early 17th century, from the British Museum, was illustrated in Chinese Ceramics in Private Collections, London, 1931, fig. 148.
