Lot Essay

The vase is decorated with a peach tree rising from blue-green rocks, asters and lingzhi, the gnarled branches are depicted with nine vividly enamelled ripe peaches and pale pink blossoms, with ten bats shown in flight. The mouth and foot are decorated with ruyi-head bands on a yellow ground.

Porcelains decorated with peaches and bats are highly favoured by the Qing emperors, as this combination symbolises good fortune and longevity. Both the Yongzheng and Qianlong reigns had bowls, dishes, and tianqiuping made with such design, such as a Qianlong ‘peach’ tianqiuping preserved in the National Palace Museum, collection number: zhongci 000034N.

Like his grandfather, the Daoguang Emperor also had special regard for the peach design. Compare to a pair of Daoguang famille rose jars decorated with peach, bat and amaranth, sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 29 May 2013, lot 2025; and a pair of Daoguang ‘peach’ tianqiuping sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 3 December 2021, lot 2904.
