Charlotte Rampling’s portrait by Helmut Newton, photographed in the baroque setting of a room at the Hôtel Nord Pinus in Arles, ranks among the most iconic images of his oeuvre. These photographs were “made especially for Photo,” the magazine of which Roger Therond was then associate director. Their publication in the June 1974 issue ensured wide visibility and marked a decisive turning point in Newton’s career. The heart attack he suffered in New York in 1971 had profoundly affected him and reinforced his determination to make his work both more personal and more provocative. The refinement and tension already characteristic of his images reached a more assertive and overtly eroticized expression.

Charlotte Rampling later spoke with deep respect of Newton’s ability to reveal the aura and authority inherent in his subjects. She agreed to this sitting in the certainty that he would capture the nuanced sensuality that had attracted the attention of filmmaker Luchino Visconti, who directed her in The Damned in 1969, and that subsequently earned her the leading role in Liliana Cavani’s The Night Porter, which premiered in May 1974.

This print, contemporary with the original negative, constitutes a rarely seen variant of the now-famous image of Rampling published on page 88 of the Photo feature.
