Descrizione dettagliata lotto

The Roger Therond Collection preserves several views of the Casa de Pilatos, the prestigious aristocratic residence built in Seville between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Charles Clifford photographed the building on numerous occasions, suggesting that it ranked among the most photogenic monuments of the celebrated Andalusian city. In the present photograph, taken from a different angle than the preceding view, the photographer adopts a wider framing that encompasses the entire patio and the richness of its decoration. At the right of the composition stands the fountain, a characteristic feature of the Italianate additions introduced in the 1530s and a recurring motif in Clifford’s work. Its presence recalls, in particular, his remarkable view of the Fountain of the Court of the Lions at the Alhambra in Granada, in which the fountain occupies a central position.

Like his other studies of Andalusian architecture, Clifford paid particular attention to the interplay of light and shadow animating the façades. The qualities inherent to the salted paper process heighten these contrasts and lend remarkable depth to the galleries unfolding behind the arcades. The warm tonalities and texture of the print further reinforce the singular atmosphere of the site, imbued with a certain exoticism. The image thus participates in the fascination that Andalusia exerted on European travelers, who during the nineteenth century perceived it as a nearby Orient, at once familiar and exotic.
