Lot Essay
Both lots 1 and 51 by Severo Antonelli come originally from the prestigious collection of Futurist photography assembled by Giovanni Lista and sold at auction in 1982. Lista’s books on Futurist photography continue to serve as the leading studies on this area of photography.
Antonelli was born in Italy, though raised in Philadelphia. His photographic career started with Pictorialist nudes, though by 1931 he had become interested in exploring abstract photography. In 1932, Antonelli met the founding member of the Futurist movement, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, in Rome and immediately joined and began exhibiting with the group.
Surviving prints by the artist are extremely rare with less than five having ever appeared at auction.
Light and Shade, bears the labels of numerous camera clubs of the era (late 1920s, 1930s).
