Lot Essay

Iwao Yamawaki brought the experimental spirit of the Bauhaus to his photography and photo-collages during his studies in Dessau between 1930 and 1932. Originally trained as an architect, Yamawaki came to use the camera to investigate the relationship between people, space, and modern design, producing striking architectural photographs, portraits, and photomontages shaped by mentors including László Moholy-Nagy and Walter Peterhans.
