Lot Essay

The artistic practice of Belgian artist Rodolphe Raoul Ubac spanned photography, painting, sculpture, and engraving. After moving to Paris in 1930, he became closely associated with the Surrealist movement, drawing inspiration from Man Ray and André Breton, among others. He became renowned for the bold imagery and experimental techniques he applied to his photography and photographic collages. His work was featured in Minotaure, the leading Surrealist publication, cementing his place among the foremost photographers of the interwar avant-garde.
