Lot Essay

The present bowl closely follows the celebrated Chenghua ‘palace’ bowls, renowned for their finely potted forms, luminous, unctuous glazes and elegantly soft tones of underglaze blue. Compare a Chenghua prototype painted with the same decoration in the Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Catalogue of the Special Exhibition of Ch'eng-Hua Porcelain Ware, Taipei, 2003, no.36

Chenghua porcelains remained highly prized throughout the Qing dynasty, and such forms were frequently revived at the imperial kilns, although Qing 'palace' bowls bearing Chenghua apocryphal marks are comparatively rare. Compare similar Chenghua-style 'palace' bowls of the same design but bearing Yongzheng marks, one from the collection of Mrs Alfred Clark and now in the British Museum, museum no. 1973,0124.2, and a pair sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 30 May 2024, lot 2894.
