Lot Essay
This elaborate incense chest is housed in a large Japanese wood box inscribed with a Meiji 12th year date, corresponding to 1879. It is also accompanied with a parchment stating that the incense chest was in the collection of Sakai Rinemon (1874-1982) from Matsue. Sakai Rinemon was a local businessman in the city of Matsue active in the dining and entertainment industry. He was elected to the city council in 1951.
A polychrome lacquer cart of very similar construction and design was in the Qing Court Collection, now in the Palace Museum, Beijing (fig. 1), illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Lacquer Wares of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 2006, pl. 99. Compare also to a carved cinnabar lacquer cart-form box sold at Christie's New York, 17 March 2017, lot 1112.
