Lot Essay

Although gilt decoration against a celadon ground was popular on imperial porcelains of the Qianlong and Jiaqing periods, examples applied to bowls are rare. For upright vessels of Qianlong and Jiaqing periods with this decoration, see four Jiaqing-marked garlic-mouth vases (18 cm.) in the Palace Museum, Taipei, access numbers: zhongci-005117 – zhongci-005120. Compare also with a pair of Qianlong-marked gilt-decorated celadon-ground archaistic vases from the J.M. Hu Collection, sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 8 April 2010, lot 1803. Compare also to a Jiaqing-marked gilt-decorated celadon-ground dragon jar and cover, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 28 May 2021, lot 2938.
