Lot Essay
The present pair of huanghuali side chairs belongs to the smaller, low-seated group, with a seat height of only 42.8 cm, suggesting their intended use in a bedchamber setting. Each chair is constructed with a straight crest rail carved from a single piece of timber to simulate a three-section joined construction. The back splat is inset with tielimu, while the aprons are left undecorated. The four stretchers are arranged at graduated heights, with the front footrest set lowest, the side stretchers slightly higher, and the rear stretcher highest, forming the configuration known as bubugao (step-by-step higher).
