Lot Essay

This impressive huanghuali qiaotou'an, measuring over two metres in length, features a single-plank top with elegantly upturned ends, unmitred bridle joints, cloud-form spandrels, kunmen-shaped open panels between the legs, and plain supporting brackets. The table's restrained elegance and balanced proportions exemplify the refined taste of Ming furniture.

Compare a related huanghuali recessed-leg table, also constructed with everted ends and dismountable bridle joints, illustrated by Wang Shixiang, Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture: Ming and Early Qing Dynasties, vol. II, Hong Kong, 1990, p. 98, no. B86. Another comparable example featuring similar kunmen side panels, illustrated by Grace Wu Bruce, Chinese Classical Furniture, New York, 1995, no. 12. See also a related huanghuali flat-top table, pingtou'an, with similarly shaped open side panels, illustrated by Gustav Ecke, Chinese Domestic Furniture, Hong Kong, 1978, p. 83, no. 64.
