NOTE:
The painting is dedicated to Poon Sook Chun (1926-2015). Born in 1926 and originally from Heshan, Guangdong Province, she moved to Hong Kong in 1950 and worked in the education industry. She later studied painting with Zhao Shao’ang and became Zhao’s goddaughter. She excelled in painting flowers and feathers with bold brushwork and bright colours. She held solo exhibitions in Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore, Malaysia, and Vancouver amongst other locations. Her monograph was published in 1981, with inscriptions by Zhao Shao’ang and preface by Chen Jinghong. Poon and her family had a good relationship with Zhao Shao’ang and received many works as gifts.

Zhao Shao’ang (1905-1998) was a leading figure of the Lingnan School, carrying forward the innovative spirit of his mentors. Renowned for his depictions of flowers, birds, insects, and animals, he devoted his life to the preservation and development of the Lingnan tradition.
Christie’s is honored to present a selection from the artist’s collection. In addition to masterpieces by the artist himself, highlights include a rare collaborative work with Chen Shuren, which bears an inscription by Gao Qifeng, as well as an important landscape painting by his distinguished disciple Ou Haonian. Together, these works offer collectors a valuable opportunity to appreciate the artistic legacy and lineage of the Lingnan School.
