Lot Essay

In 2000, Liu Kuo-sung travelled to Tibet and the Himalayan region, reaching as far as Everest Base Camp. Profoundly inspired by the sublime spectacle of the snow-covered mountains, he embarked on the creation of the Tibetan Suite series. By refining his innovative techniques and further developing his signature Liu Kuo-sung paper, he captured the grandeur, monumentality, and ethereal luminosity of the Himalayas, transforming their majestic peaks into images of extraordinary spiritual resonance.
The three Liu Kuo-sung paintings offered in this auction (Lots 128–130) represent distinct phases of the artist’s career, spanning from the 1960s to the 2000s. Together, they reveal the breadth of Liu’s artistic vision and the diverse sources of inspiration that shaped his practice. From his relocation to the United States and the excitement surrounding humanity’s first moon landing to his travels in the Himalayas, Liu continually responded to the world around him, translating personal experiences and contemporary events into an ever-evolving visual language. Together, these works offer a compelling testament to his lifelong pursuit of innovation in Chinese ink art.
