NOTE:
The recipient of this work was Chiu Chu-tung (1900-1995), a native of Nanhai, Guangdong, and a renowned Hong Kong collector. His studio was known as Ting Song Shu Wu (Listening to the Pines Studio). An avid connoisseur, Chiu assembled a distinguished collection of jades, ceramics, paintings, and calligraphy, encompassing notable works from the Ming and Qing dynasties through to the modern period. The breadth and quality of his collection were widely recognised, and he generously lent works on numerous occasions to major exhibitions in Hong Kong and abroad. Closely connected with the cultural and artistic circles of Hong Kong, Chiu maintained friendships with many leading artists and scholars, from whom he frequently received paintings and calligraphic works as gifts, with the current lot serving as a prime example. He was also among the early members of the Min Chiu Society, and played an important role in Hong Kong’s collecting community and the promotion of cultural exchange.
