NOTE:
The recipient of the painting refers to Hu Jieqing (1905-2001). A member of the Manchu Plain Red Banner, Hu was born Hu Yuzhen and also used the sobriquets Yanya and Hu Chun. A painter and writer, she was the wife of the celebrated author Lao She. Having developed an interest in painting at an early age, she later studied traditional Chinese painting under Qi Baishi and became one of his close female disciples. Inscriptions on many of Qi Baishi’s paintings contain affectionate references to her, reflecting their close relationship. Hu Jieqing and Lao She were also notable collectors and amassed a substantial collection of Qi Baishi’s works.
