Held in Hong Kong in December 1990, the Qi Gong Charity Exhibition of Calligraphy and Painting was organized to benefit a scholarship foundation at Beijing Normal University. Out of more than three hundred entries, one hundred calligraphic pieces and just ten paintings were selected—each acquired by Hong Kong patrons committed to educational advancement. The present work, Pine, was among these rare paintings.
Best known for his calligraphy, Qi Gong was also profoundly versed in Chinese painting. He studied under Jia Ximin (19th–20th century) and Wu Jingting (1904–1972), dedicating his life to the appreciation and scholarship of classical paintings and calligraphy. In this work, an ancient pine emerges from a rocky ravine, its robust trunk sweeping across the scene among sheer cliffs and rushing waters. With refined brushwork and subtle gradations of ink, the painting radiates quiet grandeur and scholarly poise.
Including proceeds from commissioned works, the initiative raised RMB 1.63 million. Qi Gong named the fund Liyun after the studio of his revered teacher, Chen Yuan (1880–1971), endowing works like the painting with meaning that reaches beyond artistic merit, reflecting his abiding dedication to education and gratitude for his mentor.
