World Time reference 5230P is very rarely offered at auction or even seen publicly. This ‘Shanghai’ Limited Edition reference 5230P-010 is among the scarcest of all versions and, to the best of our knowledge, this is only the second example of this über-rare Shanghai Limited Edition ever to be offered at international auction. Only 25 pieces were created in 2022 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Patek Philippe’s Shanghai boutique, opened in 2012 in a historic building built in 1872 as a residence for the British Consul. It has since become a beacon for Patek Philippe’s clients in Asia.
For this milestone anniversary, Patek Philippe decided to make something very special, choosing the reference 5230P World Time as the model for this strikingly distinctive limited edition. Most strikingly, the city of ‘Shanghai’ appears in red as the home city of the 24 world cities, a red star replaces the sun on the 24-hour disc. The centre of the dial is decorated with vibrant red hand-guilloché especially for this edition, the back of the timepiece is engraved in matching red “10 Years 2012-2022 Patek Philippe Maison Shanghai”.
One of the great modern Patek Philippe rarities, this watch is accompanied by a black calfskin strap with red stitching and the full set of accessories. The Certificate of Origin is stamped by Maison Patek Philippe Shanghai and partners C. Melcher GmbH. Enthusiasts and discerning international collectors will appreciate the incredible exclusivity of this Shanghai Limited Edition 5230P-010.
Ref. 5230
A descendant of the legendary Patek Philippe World Time watches of the 1930s, now ultra-desirable to collectors, reference 5230 was introduced in 2016. The dial centre is adorned with a circular hand-guilloched motif. The ultra-thin self-winding movement with its two city and 24-hour rotating disks serves to keep simultaneous and permanent track of the time in all 24 time zones. Thanks to an ingenious mechanism patented in 1999, the user can simultaneously correct all the World Time displays in one-hour increments by simply pressing the pusher at 10 o’clock. Introduced at Watches & Wonders 2022, the regular Patek Philippe 5230P brought platinum and blue together for the first time in the 5230 World Time family. Its 38.5 mm case houses the ultra-thin, self-winding caliber 240 HU, whose off-center 22k gold micro-rotor and Calatrava cross engraving are visible through the sapphire-crystal case back. It recalls the Ref. 5110 from 2000, which introduced Patek Philippe's patented World Time mechanism.
