My First Day at Work but the Horse and I are Lost
signed ‘HELEN BRADLEY’ and with a fly (lower right); inscribed 'In March 1915 our traveller was called up,/Father arrived home distraught. "I'm beginning/to think we shall have to close our business"/he said. Then he saw me, "First thing tomorrow you/start work, you'll need a much longer skirt and a good/tweed jacket." The next day I took over a horse called/Gertie and started on my travels, Father said I was/to go to Middleton, and Gertie would take me, he also/said Gertie knows all the shops and all the streets so/off you go, but, I still hadn't found Middleton and it/was twelve o'clock. Me, Gertie, the trap full of parcels were/lost. Luckily I found a policeman. "Well, Miss, you're a/long way off, but turn right and keep on." How hard we/all worked and, although everyone said the War would/be over by Christmas - it went on and on - the year was/ March 1915.' (on the artist's label attached to the backboard)
