Mrs Bowers Hat Shop
signed 'HELEN BRADLEY' and with a fly (lower right), inscribed 'On the afternoon before the King and Queen/came to Manchester, mother, grandma and the/aunts, also Miss Carter (who wore Pink) decided/they ought to have new Hats to look their/best in case the Queen came close to where/they were standing. She would see them and/smile, so, we all went to Mrs Bowers Hat/shop on Union Street. She had the best Hats in/Oldham and they were always in the height of/fashion. Mothers new hat was a beautiful Leghorn/which dipped down at the front, and when The Queen/passed by in her Landau and saw mother, The Aunts,/Miss Carter and grandma in her new Bonnet she smiled/and waved, and I'm sure she thought we all looked/very nice. Uncle John lifted me on to his shoulder so/that I could see better, and it was the loveliest Day/The day being July 13th 1905.' (on the artist's label attached to the backboard)
