Lot Essay

The present work is a study for the backdrop of The Wanderer, Frederick Ashton's ballet of 1941, for which Graham Sutherland undertook his only theatrical commission, designing the backcloths and costumes. Characteristic of his work of the period, the composition employs bright, almost acid colouring, while a low sun casts long shadows across the landscape, imbuing the scene with a heightened sense of drama and theatricality.
