Lot Essay

A similarly decorated window grill boss formerly in the Aron Collection was sold in these Rooms, 2 May 2019, lot 17. In his cataloguing of the piece, Dr. James Allan demonstrates the similarity of that boss to three formerly in the Harari Collection and now in the Museum of Islamic Art, Cairo (James Allan, Metalwork of the Islamic World, The Aron Collection, London, 1986, pp.130-1, no.34). The Harari pieces are inscribed in the name of the Ilkhanid Sultan Muhammad Khudabanda Uljaytu (r.1304-16) whose summer capital was Sultaniyya. This allows the present boss to be attributed with confidence to North West Iran, early 14th century.
