Lot Essay

Depicting part of a sürahi or vase with tulip sprays, this Iznik tile is reminiscent of a larger complete tile panel found in the Takkeci Ibrahim Aga Mosque. Built in 1592 by Takkeci Ibrahim Aga, the similarities between the designs suggest a common source. For another example of the vase-motif replicated on tile panels, see a tile sold in these Rooms, 30 April 2004, lot 112.
