At 35.5cm. diameter, this dish is exceptional for its very large size, rare in the production of Iznik in the second half of the 16th century. The design with the mirrored saz leaves, is very similar to that of a smaller dish sold in these Rooms, 30 October 2025, lot 54. Like ours, that also had a finely drawn carnations, with snapped stems as part of the design. These flowers link the dishes to a group with all feature the same distinctive broken stem (Frédéric Hitzel and Mireille Jacotin, Iznik: l’aventure d’une collection, Paris, 2005, p.177).
A dish in the British Museum has a similar inscription on its base, with a reference to ‘Vielle Fayence de Perse’ (1878,1230.527).
