Lot Essay

This elegant çatma is decorated with a fine lattice of date palms - an ancient motif that became increasingly popular in the Ottoman Empire in the 17th century. A large number of 17th century Bursa textiles employed the pattern in a wide range of design, and variation in quality (Nurhan Atasoy, Walter B. Denny, Louise W. Mackie and Hülya Tezcan, Ipek. The Crescent & The Rose, Istanbul, 2001, p.149 and pp.306-7, figs.312-18; see also Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 17.22.9).

Such textiles were highly prized in Europe, and while the boldness and large scale did not always make them fit the tightly-fitted European costume, they were often preserved as altars, tabletops and liturgical vestments (Walter Denny, 'Ottoman Turkish Textiles,' Textile Museum Journal, vol.3, 1972, p.57). Many such examples have survived in Russia, such as two dalmatics (sakkos) in the Sergiev-Posad Museum Preserve, Zargosk, and the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg (Denny, op.cit., pp.153, 306, figs.106, 318). A panel almost identical to ours was sold in these Rooms, 25 April 2024, lot 149.
