Lot Essay

A blunderbuss signed ‘work of Darwish Amrullah’ is among three blunderbusses in the Wallace Collection, London (OA1858, OA2085, OA2086; Thom Richardson and Paula Turner (eds.), The Wallace Collection Catalogue of Arms and Armour from Asia, Africa and the Ottoman World, London, 2026, p.424), all from the same commission. One of these shares the curiously spelled inscription on the lockplate with the present blunderbuss (Howard L. Blackmore, Guns and Rifles of the World, New York, 1965, pl. 278). A blunderbuss from the same commission, including the iron bar for the saddle-ring and the misspelled inscription on the lock, was formerly in the collection of Russell B. Aitken and sold at Christie’s New York, 4 April 2003, lot 502. Two comparable blunderbusses with openwork silver-gilt decoration, one formerly in the collection of Philippe Missillier, were sold at Sotheby’s London, 29 April 2025, lot 115, and Sotheby’s London, 18 April 2007, lot 160.
