Lot Essay

Munir al-Mulk, Aristu Jah (“Aristotle of the time”), was the Diwan (Prime Minister) of Hyderabad state from 1809 until 1832 during the reign of Sikandar Jah Bahadur (r.1803-29). He is receiving Rajah Chandu Lal Bahadur (1766-1845), who was a minister to the Nizam and thought of by many as the true power behind the throne. A portrait of the two men with Nizam Sikander Jah is in Mark Zebrowski, Deccani Painting, London, 1983, no. 249, p. 70. A portrait of Munir al-Mulk is in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (AC1999.55.1).
