Lot Essay

Like the preceding lot, this necklace may be associated with the tradition of South Indian temple jewellery. The use of repeated square plaques, individually set with rubies, emeralds and colourless stones in varied floral and geometric arrangements, finds an earlier parallel in a gem-set gold belt attributed to the Deccan Sultanates, probably late 17th–early 18th century, in the al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait (Salam Kaoukji, Adornment and Splendour: Jewels of the Indian Courts, London, 2023, cat. 83, pp. 194–95).
