Lot Essay

We are delighted to present to International collectors this superb reference 3990R diamond-set perpetual calendar chronograph with the rarest combination of a pink gold case and a pink gold dial. Enhanced by 40 baguette-cut diamonds of around 2.94 carats on the bezel, this ultra-rare ‘Pink on Pink’ Grand Complication features a matching pink sunburst dial with diamond hour markers. The distinctive aesthetic profile created by this stunning colour combination is regarded as the most desirable of all the reference, of incredible exclusivity, reference 3990 was produced in very small numbers between 1995 and 2005, the majority cased in yellow gold or platinum, to find a pink gold example at auction is an extremely unusual occurence. Only accessible to Patek Philippe’s most loyal and long-standing clients, to date fewer than five watches with the same configuration as the present watch have appeared publicly in the last two decades.

The perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch is more closely associated with Patek Philippe than perhaps any other model other than the Nautilus. In fact, Patek Philippe were the first company to produce perpetual calendar chronographs in series, an achievement that no other manufacturer could match for almost half a century. The perpetual calendar chronograph was in many ways the complication that re-established and confirmed for the second half of the 20th century Patek Philippe’s reputation as the greatest watch brand in the world. A reputation that is undimmed to the present day.

This dazzlingly luxurious timepiece is one of the great rarities among Patek Philippe’s gem-set Grand Compliction range. Now discontinued for over 20 years, the present watch provides collectors with perhaps the only opportunity for the forseeable future to acquire an example of a ‘pink on pink’ reference 3990.

Reference 3990
Reference 3990 was in production between 1995 and 2005 and was replaced by reference 5971. Made in yellow, white, and pink gold as well as platinum, this watch represents the first time Patek Philippe made a complicated jewel-set watch in series. Like its sibling reference 3970, it was fitted with a Lemania-based movement.
