Descrizione dettagliata lotto
With a super-rare 38mm platinum case and gorgeous pink gold dial, this ‘RN’ (Résonance Nouveau), one of the second generation of F.P. Journe’s emblematic Chronomètre à Résonance is a very exciting prospect for any F.P. Journe collector. To the best of our knowledge, the present watch is the first of its kind with this case size and dial configuration to be offered at international auction. Moreover, it is accompanied by the full set of original accessories.
When the ‘RN’ or ‘Résonance Nouveau’ was introduced as a second generation update of the Résonance model in 2004, the new model marked the transition from the brass movement era to the solid 18k rose gold movement type that is still a defining feature of F.P. Journe watches today. Although the RN model was offered in both 38mm and 40mm diameter cases, the majority of the production focused on the new 40mm case size which the majority of collectors at the time were choosing. Consequently, the traditional 38mm was only produced over a short timespan in extremely low numbers for the ‘RN’ generation, and by 2009⁄10, the 38mm diameter case had been phased out completely.
Available in two case metals: 18k rose gold and platinum, the 18k rose gold dial version such as the present watch was strictly confined to the platinum cased watches only.
For the collector and F.P. Journe enthusiast, this Chronomètre à Résonance RN is a dream find, combining a vanishingly rare 38mm platinum case with a rose gold dial makes this watch one of the key pieces of the RN generation.
The Chronomètre à Résonance
Perhaps the watch that most clearly showcases the sheer genius of contemporary watchmaker François-Paul Journe. It is the only wristwatch in the world with a movement based on ‘resonance’, a natural physical phenomenon said to have been first discovered by Christiaan Huygens in 1665. Huygens noticed that two pendulum clocks, when hung together on the same beam would beat together in perfect synchronicity. An idea that was further experimented with by the great French clockmaker Antide Janvier and the legendary watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet, both of whose work F.P. Journe greatly admires. F.P. Journe’s resonance watches notably feature two balances that are naturally synchronized and oscillate in ‘resonance’ with each other. The negative effects of wrist and body movements are hence considerably reduced. Breguet had experimented with the theory of resonance in watches in the early 19th century and indeed constructed three pocket watches using the two-balance system. With the development and production of the Chronomètre à Résonance, F.P. Journe became the first watchmaker to make a wristwatch constructed on the principle of resonance, an incredible achievement of modern horology.
