Since its introduction in 1994, the Lange 1 has become one of the most emblematic models within A. Lange & Söhne's modern collection. Instantly recognisable for its distinctive design language, the model harmoniously combines the traditions of Saxon watchmaking with a contemporary asymmetrical display, establishing an aesthetic that has become synonymous with the Glashütte manufacture.
The present timepiece is an exceptionally luxurious interpretation of the model, featuring a striking pavé diamond-set dial. According to the accompanying Guarantee, the bezel is adorned with 78 VVS brilliant-cut diamonds weighing a total of approximately 1.7 carats. Further enhancing this remarkable gem-set execution, each of the four lugs is set with six brilliant-cut diamonds, extending the brilliance of the bezel across the architecture of the case. The brilliance of the diamonds provides a spectacular contrast with the cool tones of the white gold while preserving the unmistakable proportions and architecture of the Lange 1.
Powering the watch is the hand-wound calibre L901.4, offering approximately 72 hours of power reserve and incorporating a stop-seconds mechanism. A variation of the calibre L901.0 found in most early Lange 1 models, the L901.4 features longer pinions specifically designed to accommodate thicker dials, including mother-of-pearl and diamond-set examples such as the present timepiece. Visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, the movement displays the characteristic three-quarter plate and exceptional hand-finishing for which A. Lange & Söhne is renowned.
Lange 1
Introduced in 1994 as one of the four inaugural models marking the rebirth of A. Lange & Söhne, the Lange 1 quickly became the defining watch of the modern manufacture. Its most recognisable feature is the patented outsized date, inspired by the historic five-minute digital clock of Dresden's Semper Opera House and offering considerably greater legibility than a conventional date display.
Despite its deliberately asymmetric arrangement, the dial achieves remarkable visual balance, combining the hours and minutes, small seconds, power-reserve indication and outsized date. A pusher at 10 o'clock allows the date to be advanced quickly and independently. Combining technical ingenuity, functionality and an unmistakable aesthetic, the Lange 1 remains one of the most significant and recognisable designs in contemporary watchmaking.
