Lot Essay

The present Nautilus reference 3800⁄2 represents a remarkable fusion of jewelry and watchmaking. The accompanying Extract from the Archives confirms its lavish gem-setting, with 76 diamonds weighing approximately 0.47 carats. The iconic Nautilus design is further elevated by a diamond-set dial, enhancing the model's celebrated balance and elegance while preserving the purity of Gérald Genta's original design.

Reference 3800
Conceived as the mid-size counterpart to the original Nautilus reference 3700, reference 3800 remained in production from 1981 until 2006 while faithfully preserving the distinctive design language of the collection. With a 37.5 mm case, compared to the 42 mm. dimensions of the 'Jumbo' reference 3700, it offered a more versatile wrist presence without compromising the unmistakable character of the Nautilus.

Introduced alongside the reference was the calibre 335 SC, whose addition of a central seconds hand distinguished the model from its larger predecessor. Early examples were fitted with the first generation of the movement, which did not incorporate a quick-set date mechanism. In 1987, Patek Philippe introduced an updated version of the calibre featuring a quick-set date, marking an important technical evolution during the long production life of reference 3800.
